Leveraging Transatlantic Private Capital Flows to Finance Climate Change Mitigation in the UK – A Roundtable Discussion with the US ESG Investment Community

Case Study – Sustainable Biomass

One of the largest sustainable wood baskets in the world, the US Southeast has been providing sustainable biomass to the UK for over a decade now in an effort to help the UK meets its renewable energy targets.  US institutional capital has invested billions in sustainable supply chains in this effort.  While to date these sustainable supply chains have been used for biomass to generate power, in the near future, they will be used to supply sustainable biomass for biomass carbon capture and storage (“BECCs”), efficient combined heat and power applications, and the decarbonization of heavy industry.

Case Study – Ecological Restoration and Nature-Based Solutions

There is a global biodiversity crisis driven by mounting pressures including land degradation and climate change. Within the UK, responses include the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, which sets out a vision to secure a more biodiverse, connected and resilient landscape. The Natural Capital Committee has argued for the need to secure Net Environmental Gains. A recent report from the UK Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology highlights the need to secure our natural capital, not just to support biodiversity, but also to ensure the provision of wider ecosystem services. Questions remain, however, as to how the UK achieves net environmental gain: What should go where? What does success look like? How long will it take to reassemble resilient communities that can reliably deliver ecosystem services?

Moderated Roundtable Discussion with US ESG Investment Community

This event will be followed by a reception and dinner for TEF members and supporters.
